  4.    This Compact was written by Pilgrim leaders as a means of
  5. establishing a form of government for themselves and the 70
  6. others who had joined them when they sailed from Plymouth,
  7. England in September 1620.

  10.    IN The Name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten,
  11. the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the
  12. Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King,
  13. Defender of the Faith, etc. Having undertaken for the Glory of
  14. God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith, and the Honour of
  15. our King and Country, a Voyage to plant the first colony in the
  16. northern Parts of Virginia; Do by these Presents, solemnly and
  17. mutually in the Presence of God and one another, covenant and
  18. combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for out
  19. better Ordering and Preservation, and Furtherance of the Ends
  20. aforesaid; And by Virtue hereof do enact, constitute, and frame,
  21. such just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions, and
  22. Offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and
  23. convenient for the general Good of the Colony; unto which we
  24. promise all due Submission and Obedience. In WITNESS whereof we
  25. have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape Cod the eleventh of
  26. November, in the Reign of our Sovereign Lord King James of
  27. England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth and of Scotland, the
